How the EBU ruined Eurovision
A Contest Betrayed: How the EBU Destroyed the Spirit, Fairness, and Future of Eurovision
Starting from the introduction of the BIG4/5, to the elimination of juries in the semifinals, and to allowing a genocidal state to participate, the EBU has ruined Eurovision for all of us, the latter being the final nail in the coffin.
Managing such a big event like Eurovision is definitely not easy. However, when wrong decisions are continuously taken, it will lead to its ultimate collapse.
Today, we are discussing some of the most outrageous EBU decisions that decreased the quality of the competition over time, until its final days in 2025.
The Creation of the Big 5
The Big 5 was created back in the 90s, when Germany wasn’t allowed to participate because the number of spots was limited and their previous entrant achieved a horrible result. Based on this, Germany wasn’t allowed to take part in Eurovision, and when they told the EBU that they wanted to leave the competition forever and also take with them their huge contribution, the EBU got a panic attack and introduced the concept of the Big 5.
Italy, Spain, Germany, France, and the UK were given the royal treatment by automatically qualifying for the Grand Final each year, without going through the semifinals. This is the reason why Germany and the UK hold records of nul points when the final voting happened.
This concept is absolutely horrifying and wrong, because it basically decreases the quality of the competition. Great songs with big potential are being left in the semifinals, just to allow the big money countries to be part of the final.
Allowing Ukraine to Still Be Part of Eurovision Since 2016
Ukraine has sent some great bangers to Eurovision, but also some horrifying songs that not only qualified, but also got a respectable top 5 position. Everything culminated with the steal that happened back in 2022, when basically Ukraine stole the victory from Spain because of the huge diaspora voting and sympathy votes.
Even though Ukraine is not necessarily the one to blame, the EBU should have either changed the voting system or reduced some of their points given this horribly unfair advantage. Their journey continues even today, so yeah, another steal could happen any day.
Allowing israel to Still Be Part of Eurovision
The EBU is hypocritical by banning Russia and allowing izrahell to be part of Eurovision. Russia is doing horrible things to Ukrainians, but in the eyes of the EBU, the Palestinian people are sadly less important than Ukrainian people. So who cares if izrahell is committing genocide? Let’s hold hands all together and celebrate Eurovision, pretending that nothing is happening in the world. This is the reason why Eurovision lost 5 countries in 2026 and will lose more in the upcoming months.
Izrahell not only takes part in Eurovision, but also makes sure to manipulate the televote since 2025, narrowly avoiding taking home the trophy. But you know, bribing the juries is basically the next easy step (wink wink, Azerbaijan).
I know I promised not to ever write about Eurovision, but I felt like an article like this is necessary to remind people what they are doing now. The EBU is the reason why this contest is now dying at an accelerated rate, and it’s honestly just sad.
